Neurosurgery Before Neurosurgery: The Formative Years 1517-1867
Special Event at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Library on October 5, 2017, Neurosurgery as a surgical discipline is often attributed to the early 20th Century. However, the transition to modern concepts of surgical intervention began in the 16th Century. This lecture will illustrate the early development of neuroanatomy and neurosurgery, with emphasis on a selection of illustrated material found in medical works published from the 16th through the 18th Centuries. The images include surgical portraits of patients, genre scenes of neurosurgeons at work, and anatomical dissections of the brain. During this time, the early signs of the modern concepts of surgical intervention were evident.
